The Power of Meal Support in Overcoming Disordered Eating

Are you tired of feeling out of control with food and weary of making another promise to yourself that tomorrow you will do better with your eating? Do you feel stuck in harmful eating patterns and need some extra guidance at meals to help you make the changes you desire? Are you ready to end your obsession with food and begin to trust your body again?

There are so many reasons why people need support with food when they struggle with disordered eating or an eating disorder. Here are just a few:

  • There is so much information and misinformation about nutrition that makes it challenging to know what and when to eat

  • Disordered eating behaviors of restrictive and binge eating make it hard to connect with your body’s hunger and fullness cues

  • Increased anxiety and persistent thoughts about food lead to trepidation or dread about upcoming meals

  • Feelings of shame and guilt when eating or after eating make it difficult to find pleasure and satisfaction in your meals

Meal support is an important part of healing from disordered eating and eating disorders because part of recovery is learning how to listen to your body to get adequate nutrition as well as make peace with food and your body. Kindful Body’s new Meal Support Coaching Program, is designed to help clients move toward food freedom and body peace. Our innovative coaching program is led by experienced eating disorder registered dietitians.

Using a science-based approach, our Meal Support Coaching Program provides real time accountability in a structured setting. You will have weekly virtual direct meal support coaching from the comfort of your own space. This program is ideal if you are looking to explore eating patterns, find meal balance, and increase your self-care. It can be joined on its own or as a complement to your regular one-on-one dietary or therapy sessions. Sometimes a little more support at meals can make all the difference in lasting recovery.

According to research, “Nutrition professionals possess knowledge and expertise that includes nutrition, physiology, and skills for promoting behavior change relative to the psycho-socio-cultural aspects of eating.”  (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20413693/)

Having a registered dietitian led meal support will provide you a consistent and safe place to establish eating patterns where you can learn to trust your hunger and fullness cues, reduce eating anxiety through familiarity and consistency and take the confusion out of making food choices. It provides in the moment emotional support during the meal where you will be compassionately supported to overcome fear foods, work through tough emotions and reframe self-defeating thoughts.

According to a recent survey conducted by Within Health, it was revealed that almost half (44%) of Americans are currently on a diet, and 80% have been on some sort of diet in the past. Dieting, including keto, paleo, intermittent fasting, juice cleanses, among others, is one of the most common risk factors for the development of an eating disorder. An often cited statistic from the National Eating Disorder Association is that 20-25% of people who diet will go on to develop an eating disorder. Sadly this statistic doesn’t include the countless others who end up caught in an endless disordered relationship with food, including restrict-binge cycles, yo-yo dieting and orthorexia, an excessive preoccupation with eating healthy food. Similar to eating disorders, disordered eating can have negative medical and psychological consequences affecting a person’s quality of  life.

Kindful Body’s Meal Support Coaching Program is open to anyone in the United States struggling with a disordered relationship with food, or an eating disorder, including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, Avoidant Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) or Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED).

Some highlights of the program include:

  • Live weekly meal support group where you dine with a registered dietitian and practice mindfully connecting with your hunger and emotions

  • Real time guidance around disordered eating behaviors during the weekly meal support group

  • Weekly personalized coaching and communication that suits your unique needs through the Recovery Record app

  • Access to educational videos and worksheets to further strengthen your Intuitive Eating and self-care skills
